Brigg Report Card

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 16/07/2004

DR Fishy went to Brigg to see whether the new players and trialists were good enough to play for Town. The Mariners won the game 3-2.

1. Anthony Williams

Ex-Hartlepool keeper didn’t looked too convincing in goal. Nearly dropped a few crosses and could have perhaps dealt with the goals a little better, especially in organising his wall for Brigg’s second. However, he did claim quite a few crosses reasonably well in the second half.

Grade: C-

2. Jason Crowe

Made some incisive runs down the right in the second half - playing on the right of a 4 man midfield. Linked well with Parkinson, although first touch and cross sometimes a little disappointing.

Grade: C

3. Ronnie Bull

Got forward well down the left in the first half - playing on the left of the midfield. Looked quite strong and determined in the tackle and had an opportunity to score in the first half, but decided to cross the ball across the face of the goal. Crossing was not perhaps as strong as his replacement, Kevin Nicholson.

Grade: B-

4. Simon Ramsden

Played at centre back, with Whittle and Young either side of him. Looked quite assured and confident - even got forward round the back of the Brigg defence on one occasion - an all round competent game

Grade: B-

5. Justin Whittle

Wasn’t tested a great deal in all honesty. Got in the way of most things that were thrown at him by Brigg and despite not being acclaimed for his passing, he actually made quite a few decent passes forward in the first half.

Grade: C+

6. Greg Young

Played on the left side of the defensive three at the back and looked steady. Played some really good balls out from defence, and can be pleased with his return to competitive action following his shoulder injury from the end of last season.

Grade: B-

7. Terry Fleming

One of Towns star players for evening - playing a good 70 minutes in the centre of midfield. Seemed to form a good understanding with Stacy Coldicott and didn’t allow the Brigg midfield much time on the ball at all. Scored a cracking 25-yard goal as well!

Grade: B+

8. Stacy Coldicott

As always - dependable and solid. As said above, seemed at home with Fleming in the middle and can be pleased with his contribution.

Grade: B-

9. Marvin Robinson

The former Derby and Chesterfield man was fairly busy in the first half but made no great impression. He hit the bar from a header and missed an easy chance from 5 yards out, which he hit at the keeper. Won quite a few headers but gave the ball away too often and didn’t look particularly fit.

Grade: C-

10. Andy Parkinson

Along with Fleming, the man of the match. Made some excellent runs down the right hand side and scored the goal that his hard work deserved. Formed a good understanding with Crowe down the right flank, enabling him to get round the back of the defence on several occasions.

Grade: B+

11. Yannick Kamanan

Started brightly down the left hand side of the three forward players, but faded and saw little of the ball. Looked to have a good turn of pace and he got quite a few useful crosses in, but also gave the ball away a little too cheaply. Maybe worth another look at for Slade.

Grade: C+

12. Tony Crane

Only played for 15 minutes or so. Won a few headers, and didn’t do a lot else!

Grade: C+

14. Graham Hockless

Started on the right side of the three forwards and later moved into midfield. Decent movement in and around the box, linking up well with McDermott. Should have scored when Watson crossed for him in the second half, but all in all a decent showing

Grade: C+

15. Ludovic Dje

Replaced Young and played on the right of the three defenders and looked quite impressive. Strong in the air, he was caught out once by a Brigg attacker, but used his pace to good effect to then win back the ball. Another who should perhaps be given another chance.

Grade: B-

16. Alex Higgins

Replaced Coldicott and looked solid in midfield. Tried to link up play with Nicholson down the left, and did so with reasonable effect. No thrills, but an okay performance

Grade: C+

17. John Mcdermott

Town’s record appearance holder looked sprightly on the right side of midfield and linked up well with the forwards. Crossed for the Mariners’ third goal and was constantly talking to players around him. Perhaps more effective in this position than Crowe

Grade: B

18. Kevin Nicholson

Played on the left of midfield and put some good crosses into the Brigg box. Also tracked back quite well to cover the defence. Not a great deal between him and Bull, except maybe that Nicholson looked slightly better going forward.

Grade: B-

19. Amadou Konte/Jean-Gabin Moubeke

Whoever this guy was (answers on a postcard please!), he played in the middle of the three strikers for about 15 minutes and didn’t do a great deal of exciting things but neither did he do much wrong. Though he should perhaps have made his huge presence felt a little more, leading us to the conclusion that he is unlikely to earn a contract with the Mariners.

Grade: C

20. Darren Watson

Looked like a more sprightly Mansaram, and with more pace. Held the ball up quite well, and even if he lost it - he tended to win it back quite a bit by chasing back. When Town broke away, it was obvious he had pace to burn and nearly scored on a number of occasions, including the last kick of the match when he had a shot blocked when it looked to be heading for the top corner.

Grade: B

Carlos Garrocho ("Man Without A Number")

Played on the left of the three up front in the second half and scored Town’s winner with a sweet left foot volley. Before then he had not done a great deal, but seemed to grow in confidence a little after that. Other players seemed to be using sign language to communicate with him, which suggests that the man from Angola is not all that fluent in English. Another that could be worth another look for Mr Slade.

Grade: B-

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
