Irish Defender Trial

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/10/2004

IRISH U-21 international Stephen Capper is the latest Scarborough defender to land a trial at Blundell Park. The 21-year-old left back, a former teammate of compatriot Michael Reddy at Sunderland, played in Monday's reserve game with Lincoln, which Town won 5-3.

Capper has played for Conference outfit Scarborough since being released by Sunderland in the summer of 2003. Despite playing in the Conference, the Irishman captained the under-20 Republic side at last winter's World Youth Championships in the UAE.

As well as his link with Reddy, Capper is of course known to former Boro boss Russell Slade, now at the helm at Blundell Park.

Town still have a number of defenders out injured. Tony Crane is expected to miss the whole season; Simon Ramsden is 6-7 weeks away from a return after suffering with a neck problem; Glen Downey has almost recovered from his ankle injury; Dean Gordon (knee), Rob Jones (nose), Jason Crowe (hamstring), and John McDermott (hamstring) are all relatively short-term injuries, with only Crowe in serious doubt for the Swansea clash on Saturday.
