Paul Groves

Paul Groves should have been a Town legend, simple as that. He was ever-present in central midfield for several seasons whilst also being top scorer and player of the year on more than one occasion. Strong in the tackle and good in the air, Groves was one of those all-round midfielders so rare these days. After a quiet start following his record £150,000 arrival from Blackpool, Groves burst into life with a hat-trick at Luton then quickly became a favourite amongst Buckley and other managers (consistently selected for the PFA team).

Strange really, but despite his tremendous service to Town, it seems he will more likely be remembered for some embarrassing performances at centre half and (despite a good start) a rather ill-fated managerial career at Blundell Park.

Groves' main problem was a complete lack of charisma and creativity. Seemingly with the personality of a Tory MP as a manager and the clever knack of appearing to have done nothing during the whole of a game except nonchalant backpasses. Incidentally he also moved to West Bromwich with AB for £650K before returning a season later with his tail between his legs for less than half that money.

To those regular Town fans, Groves was a reflection of the Buckley era; honest, hard working, simple, effective but rather lacking in excitement and charisma.

Since being dismissed by Town, Groves had a successful spell at Scunthorpe before joining the ex-Mariners contingent at York.
