The Opposition View: Barnet

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/08/2005

THE Mariners head to early League Two pace-setters Barnet for the first time in their history on Saturday. Both teams are fresh from their cup exploits: Barnet beat Bristol City away, while the Mariners knocked out Derby County.

It has been a dream start, winning three and drawing one? Did you in all honesty expect it?

No! I thought we would struggle in both away games against Northampton and Carlisle but to win each time was a real surprise. I have always thought out home form would be solid but to win at the favourtites and then at Carlisle (a hostile place with passionate fans, coupled with the fact they wanted revenge for out flattering victory there last season) was fantastic. I just hope our good run continues!

How do you think the Conference compares to that of League Two?

To date I havent really seen much difference. Sides pass the ball more but in terms of defending and finishing it really hasn't been too different so far. Perhaps we have yet to play the quality sides!

How far can Barnet go this time in the Football League?

This team has real quality but our final position depends on injuries and suspensions. We have a very small squad so keeping our best players fit is vital. If we get the luck on that side of things I really think a play off place is not out of the question.

What have been the main changes to your squad over the summer?

Ross FlitneyWe have kept all of our championship winning side together. We have signed a goalkeeper, Ross Flitney (left) from Fulham, left back Adam Gross from Charlton and Striker Jason Norville from Watford. The biggest change is a new formation - 4-5-1. Last season we played a 4-4-2 but the introduction of an extra midfielder has really worked so far.

Do you think your squad is stronger or weaker than last season?

Whilst we have not made any additions to the first 11, I believe everyone at the club from last season has improved over the summer. They look sharper, fitter and hungrier than ever!

Nicky BaileyWhat players should we look out for?

Our two attacking midfielders - Nicky Bailey (left) and Dean Sinclair. Both are real livewires and always looking for a goal.

Who are your biggest rivals in this division?

Leyton Orient, although the fixture against Peterborough is always a spicy one.

Who do you expect to do well this season?

Despite our victory against them I would still expect Northampton to be up there, whilst Darlington will also challenge. However, my tip of the title goes to Wycombe. They have an experienced man in charge in John Gorman, whilst Tommy Mooney will score goals and create chances for his team mates.

Do you have any pre-conceptions about Grimsby?

You have experience at this level and pass the ball well. Like us, you have a small squad but you have made a promising start.

Finally, a scoreline prediction?

Close game but Barnet to shade it 2-1.
