Peterborough Game - The Inquest

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 11/09/2005

GRIMSBY Town were delighted with the result against Peterborough United at London Road on Saturday but frustration reigned at the Posh camp after the game finished. Posh manager Mark Wright was at a loss to account for his side's lack of scoring power.

"I am feeling like I am just repeating previous press conferences, because yet again we have dominated a game, but failed to score. I can't fault the lads for their effort, but we have been hit by a sucker punch yet again."

"Grimsby have scored with their only shot on goal. We wasted so many opportunities in front of goal. I am frustrated, it is time the strikers started converting the chances and they will be receiving a major kick up the backside this week in training."

"I don't know why the strikers are not gambling and it is something we have to sort out this week. Forwards have to gamble and be optimistic - our strikers are waiting and not getting into positions to hurt the opposition. Grimsby manager Russell Slade said we are the best side he has played, but that is no consolation to me."

As expected, Town boss Russell Slade, had no such worries. It was a great day all round with Shankly's record going, Macca's 600th game and 3 points in the bag. He did not forget the fans in his post match interview.

".…Fans were magnificent!…."

"We've had a resilience since the start of the season and we've shown it again. To be fair, Peterborough put us under a lot of pressure and put a lot of quality balls into the box."

"Four minutes extra seemed an absolute eternity but we hung in there - credit to the players and the travelling fans who witnessed it. They were magnificent and they really got behind us today. The fans were urging us on right until the 94th minute."

"I put up before we went out, 'let it be a day to remember, not a day to forget - it will be a day to remember. We are joint top of the league, Macca's 600th appearance, the players have some bonus money in their pockets, and the momentum carries on and we are unbeaten away from home."

"There are many, many positives today and it is days like this that you have to enjoy."

"That's a very good Peterborough side for me. In fact, I would go so far to say that they are the best side that we have played so far this season."

Looking ahead, Slade said; "We've just got to try and keep the momentum going. If we could establish any momentum at home we are going to be in pretty good shape. There's a long way to go. We can now say that we've got off to a good start and we now need to carry on and build on that."

"We need to take on game at a time. It is important that we get back to winning ways at home to Torquay next week. We need to try and take maximum points from that game and push us up the table even further."

So what did the fans have to say?

Fantastic achievement - especially to better the late great Bill Shankly.

"Great battling performance, despite creating very little 1st half. Some good stuff at times in 2nd half (we were well on top during one 15 min spell)and a deserved win. If Posh are the best we've played (per Russell Slade) then we really have very little to worry about! Rob Jones, Justin Whittle and Steve Mildenhall were immense.

Fantastic support - especially the constant refrain of "Russell Slade's barmy army" during the last 10 mins and the 4 mins added time.

James Quinn may have caused England problems but he couldn't beat the mighty GTFC. Happily Trevor Benjamin couldn't keep up his goalscoring record against us when he replaced Quinn.

"I haven't heard Town fans sing one song for 14 mins for a very long time. What an atmosphere must have given players great heart to hear that."

"A good game, you were the best we have seen so far this Season. We were a little unlucky with 15-16 attempts to your 4-5, but if we do not score, we do not win. Best of luck."

Poshfan1 was impressed. "The reason you won was that your fans outsang us. My mate said before the game; 'It's only Grimsby.'

Only Grimsby was the best we have seen this season. We will return the favour at your place."
