The Mariners may have reached the summit of League Two this weekend after a 3-0 home success over Torquay - but attention now turns to the game that has caught the imagination of the fans since the draw for the second round of the cup was made in August. The visit of Premiership giants Tottenham gives the Mariners players a chance to pit their wits against some of the best players in the top flight. Robbie Keane, Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon and Andy Reid are all expected to play a part in the tie. That might sound daunting, but Town fans know all too well that a cup upset is not impossible, as past encounters at Blundell Park down the years have shown.

Head to Head | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Spurs have the edge of the Mariners when it comes to looking at the history books, with nine wins to Town's five. Most of the matches against Spurs came in the old Division Two in the inter war period and the late 1940s. There's only ever been one draw between the two sides, that coming in a 1-1 draw in 1948. And with tonight's encounter going into extra time and penalties if the scores are level, that statistic will not change.

Ciaran Toner. The diminutive midfielder came on to make his home debut on Saturday and will hope to face his former club on Tuesday evening. The 24 year old started his career at White Hart Lane without making a first team appearance. During his time he was loaned out to Peterborough and Bristol Rovers before a permanent move to Leyton Orient in 2002.

Last Meeting | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Town last met Tottenham in the League Cup (or the Rumbelows Cup as it was then), in the third round of the competition. This was back in October 1991 when Town were in the old Division Two, just a season before the Premiership came in. Alan Buckley's side gave a decent account of themselves, but just couldn't cope with the class of Spurs. Goals from David Howells, Gordon Durie and England legend Gary Lineker meant Spurs progressed into the next round, in front of 17,000 at Blundell Park. Grimsby Team: Sherwood, McDermott, Jobling (M Smith), Futcher (Watson), Lever, Cunnington, Childs, Gilbert, Rees, Cockerill, Woods. Tottenham Team: Thorstvedt, Edinburgh, Van Den Hauwe, Howells (Bergsson), Segley, Mabbutt, Stewart, Durie, Samways, Lineker, Allen (Walsh) Attendance: 17,017
