Beat the Bookies: Week 22

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 29/12/2005

LAST week's theory of lots of upsets over the Xmas period proved totally wrong and there were in fact very few! Instead I suspect all the upsets are instead going to happen over the New Year weekend, especially with the ridiculous number of games this year.

Town won both of their games for starters against bottom half opposition to upset my apple cart (and very pleased I was to be wrong!). The New Year weekend sees their squad have two severe tests in the shape of Wrexham away and Carlisle at home. Both Wrexham and Carlisle had their games postponed on Wednesday, which could prove to be a big factor as the squads and fitness levels are stretched this weekend.

Wrexham are actually slight favourites with bet365.com to beat Town at the Racecourse. The Welshmen are rated 13/10, with Town marginally longer at 7/4 and the draw 9/4. Wrexham's home form on paper looks very good, although the only team they have played at home in the leading pack is Carlisle, who they lost to in August. It's a difficult one to call, but I'd probably plump for a home win at those odds.

Hull City have their big Yorkshire derby with Leeds at Elland Road on New Year's Eve. Leeds are expected to win, but Hull have underachieved this season and have a team capable of springing a surprise. The argument over ticket allocation may be just the fillip the Tiger's need to up their game against third placed Leeds. Hull are 4/1 to win with bet365.com.

Elsewhere there are other possible upsets on the cards. Chelsea are 4/1 not to beat Birmingham, (who drew with Man Utd in their last game) with bet365.com. Bolton are 13/2 to win at Man Utd, surely worth a few quid as they are not far apart in the table. Chesterfield could be the latest "minnows" to claim Forest's scalp in League One. The Derbyshire club are actually above Forest in the table but are still 5/2 to win at the City Ground with bet365.com. That's also worth a few quid if you have any left!
