Question of the Week

Next England manager?

New Contract
New Contract

Hold On There Mr Fenty!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 13/02/2006

HOLD on there Mr Fenty! Do not be too hasty. As a supporter of Russell Slade, I agree that he is worth an extension to his contract, because he deserves it based on his achievements so far.

He has brought to the club new confidence and stability in the football side of things, doing what none of the last few managers have done. It is right therefore that he is offered an extension to his contract.

But it would be foolish to start talking about two or three year extensions because Russell Slade at this time is still an unknown quantity.

The system and tactics we are using at the moment, although not pretty or pure football appear to be successful in what we are trying to achieve. That is promotion to League 1. So be it.

But what next? If we do get promoted, which seems likely, we will have to be playing a different style of football if we intend to survive in League 1 or to gain promotion to the Champions League.

With the greatest respect to Mr Slade, we have only seen one style of football since he has been with us. Successful as it has been up to now, it will not continue to be so as we move higher up the leagues.

Surely it would be more prudent to wait a little while longer until it is determined if Mr Slade has the capabilities to get us back to playing 'football' rather than the long ball game, before he is offered long extensions to his contract.

I, for one, would be pleased to see Mr Slade at the helm when we enter the Champions League but, as past history has shown, we just cannot take chances. Especially if those chances results in compensation payoffs at a later date.

Russell Slade has done a magnificent job for us so far. But he has been in management long enough to know that one Swallow doesn't make a Summer and one season does not make us world champions either.

Slade is the best manager we have had in recent years but we should not let that cloud our judgement.

The proof of the pudding will be at the end of next season - or even before.

So hold on Mr Fenty for just a little while longer.

Caution is the key.
