Player Ratings - Chester

GRIMSBY ground their way to a 1-0 victory over struggling Chester City at Blundell Park this afternoon. Gary Jones was on target for the Mariners, although Woodhouse could have made things easier, but missed a late penalty for Town.

GKMildenhallIt was business as normal for Town's ever reliable goalkeeper who looked solid after his disappointing mistake at Mansfield. To be fair he didn't have an awful lot to do but still dealt with whatever was thrown at him.7
LBNeweyWasn't his best game in black and white but still managed to stay in position and cause Chester's right side a few problems. Needs a lot of work on his defending though.6
RBMcDermottA pleasing 90 minutes under his belt for Mr. Grimsby. He didn't have a lot to do but still linked up well with Parkinson on the right side. The old boy has still got another season's worth of petrol in his tank.7
CBR JonesLooked better in the second half after surprisingly being caused problems in the air by the physical presence of Michael Branch in the first half. But in the second tided up a bit and seemed to accompany Futcher in the heart of Town's defence well.7
CBFutcherDid okay and seemed to bond well with new central defensive partner, Rob Jones. But still a lot more to come from 'Big Ben'.7
LWTonerA very good display from the ex-Lincoln man. Apart from being seriously involved in the goal and making several chances for the Mariners , the best one for Paul Bolland, the man who many Mariner fans believe should have a more regular role in the team didn't have a lot to do.
RWParkinsonNot the best display from the 'scouser' who always has the potential to show glimpses of magic. He did though cause Chester a few problems but maybe right wing isn't his best position.6
CMWoodhouseA decent display will be marred by the fact he blasted the penalty over Gillet's bar to deny the Mariners a more convincing victory over a poor finishing Chester side. Some very good passes and link up play to wings warrant his selection and it is to be hoped he keeps his decent form up7
CMBollandWhen Town need a grafter and hard worker Paul Bolland is the man to ask. He helped Futcher and Jones well with the threat of Blundell, Branch and Lowe. A solid display.7
FCG JonesA potent threat in the air against a newly built Chester defence and always looked like a threat in front of goal.7
FCCohenDid okay in filling the shoes of the vital Michael Reddy. Caused the Chester defence problems with his pace and physical attributes. Didn't have rub of the green though.7

Match Rating6Not a classic.
Crowd Rating7Still could be louder.
Ref Watch6R Lee started well but lost control.

Assessment: 3 points. It's as simple as that, especially at this stage of the season. It wasn't a pretty game with Chester coming only for a point but Town battled professionally without playing a 'Brazilian' type of football and came away with the most important thing.
