Lincoln Player Ratings

By: Jake Olley
Date: 25/03/2006

FOR arguably the biggest game of the season Russell Slade made two changes for the visit to Sincil Bank. Croft replaced McDermott and Woodhouse returned for Congo international JPK Kalala. Here are the player ratings for the disastrous 5-0 defeat at Lincoln and my full verdict of the day's events.

GKMildenhallWas a victim of a Robinson dive in the first half which resulted in 'Premiership' referee Steve Bennett awarding a penalty for Lincoln which was converted by Mayo. Mildenhall's desire also to go for the ball which led to the Forrester's goal may have also been the fault of the ex-Notts County 'keeper. This was arguably Mildy's worst performance in a Town shirt which saw him only make one decent save to deny the lethal City. 6
RBCroftDid okay after coming in at short notice to replace Macca. Crofty shepherded a Lincoln attack in the second half which looked a certain goal which was definitely Town's best defensive movement. He also offered Town another dimension with the long throws which against weaker defences may come in handy. I really like Gary Croft and believe he is a much better defender than the useless Tom Newey and should become first choice left back. 6
LBNewey'You're not fit to wear the shirt' chant summed up Newey's display today and really most of his season. He couldn't pass or tackle and - as highlighted in previous Player Ratings - he ball watches when the play is on the opposite flank which ultimately was the real reason for Town's failure to deal with the attack which led to the Mayo penalty. This was definitely Newey's worst performance of the season and one that probably finalises his departure at the end of the season. A absolute disgrace and three is being nice.3
CBFutcherMust have forgot which side he was playing for today as he and Whittle threw away some previously very good performances. Despite being a threat going forward there was no understanding at the back which left Town in disarray. Though in the second half he looked a better player with Jones but still not good enough. Very disappointing.4
CBWhittleThe fact he was substituted at half time sums up the fact that Justin and Ben's honeymoon spell at the centre of defence is well and truly over. He showed no fight and for a captain he was a disgrace to the armband which he doesn't deserve. He defended too high up the pitch when Lincoln are a renowned hit and hope team. This definitely ends the spell of the Justin and Ben partnership but it still remains to see which one will partner Rob Jones at the back for hopefully next week's bounce back.4
LWTonerOne of my players of the season didn't look up for it today on his return to Sincil Bank but did pass well at times and just hit Town's best chance wide before the break. In my opinion there were worse midfielders out there and didn't deserve to be substituted at half time. Keep your chin up Ciaran and don't let one bad performance get you down.6
CMWoodhouseOne of the better Mariners today and in the first half looked good going forward but didn't really help the back four enough who looked vulnerable without the help of Woodhouse and Bolland today who have been so instrumental in the Mariners' great season. Not bad but not good.6
CMBollandWasn't involved at all and was run ragged by a more up for it and better Lincoln midfield. Not a lot more to say as I can't really remember Paul's involvement in the game at all. But again he's been my player of the season so far and shouldn't be down about a bad game. 5
RMCohenNon existent and was one of the players that showed no desire to win. He should've done better with the ball across the goal straight after the break which should have resulted in a Mariners' goal. This is the second poor performance on the trot for Gary and he needs to buck up his ideas soon before he is dropped.4
FCG JonesNot involved simply because of the lack of service and a brilliant Lincoln defence which read him and Reddy perfectly. Nothing to feed on but still was one of the players that looked bothered and showed his frustration about the poor performance. 6
FCReddyAgain no service for strikers means no goals and Michael received no service all game which therefore resulted in no goals and maybe leaving the Irishman thinking 'Is it really worth working this hard for goals when I can get them on a plate at bigger clubs?'. Town really need to buck their ideas up and get promotion or lose super Michael Reddy.6

Match RatingGrimsby fans' view 0/10. Lincoln fans' view 10/10.
Attendance7,182What's it like to see a crowd?
Ref Watch5Very poor and doesn't deserve to be called a elite referee.
Crowd RatingTrue Grimsby fans 8/10. Hooligans 0/10.

Assessment: 'You're not fit to wear the shirt' song sums it all up. A complete disgrace!
