World Cup Diary

BEEN wunderbar living here while the WC is getting into its stride...took a chilled bike ride round the city yesterday with my missus and it was quality...stopped for the odd scoop along the way...took in the vibe...suddenly occurred to me how underrated dear old Bankfurt is!

The sun was relentlessly beating down and England fans everywhere enjoying the amazing facilities the authorities have laid on, not to mention the bars/pubs all thronged with footy fever. You could get a litre of ice cold Licher pils and a half meter bratwurst for like 6 Euros on the banks of the river! The atmosphere on Saturday was unreal! Yesterday was even nicer as a distinct hangover was in the air and chilled Sunday recuperation going on.

There are street stalls and giant screens all over the city centre but the screen embedded in the middle of the Main river is classic German engineering genius! They even have proper stands set up on the banks so you get almost stadium like atmosphere but with loads of beer/food stalls at your disposal too. No way this would ever happen in Blighty...or if it did it would be highly cheesy, penny-pinchingly low-fi and a massive rip-off. Here virtually everything is free and all beer/food/mechandise prices are buttons.

FIFA may have messed up the ticketing by being too greedy but you can't knock the Germans on the ground in any way. The organisation has been superb. I was in Berlin for the build-up and then opening ceremony and matches...right by the Brandenburg Gate...and atmosphere was fantastic. Early days but I reckon Germany should get EVERY World Cup on this evidence alone!

Oh and being a man of leisure makes it even better...two months into my sabbatical now and just warming to task of doing nothing but enjoying myself 24/7...off down to the river to watch the Japan v Oz game later...not a cloud in the sky and just had brekky on the terrace after a nice lie-in...as you do...possibly mooch on down to the Italian in my courtyard for a spot of luncheon and catch some more rays...then go buy my train ticket to Nuremberg for Thursday perhaps before getting in the first frosty of the day and checking out the scene by. It's all so terribly difficult! Decisions, decisions!

Please don't work too hard people...there's a World Cup on for heavens sake! Ha ha...My thoughts and indeed, sincere commiserations, are with you all...

Come On England!!!! (The Roon back v the might T&T apparantly!)
