Bolland Contract Talks

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/07/2006

MIDFIELDER Paul Bolland is poised to sign a contract extension to keep him at Blundell Park until at least the end of the 2007-2008 season. The Fishy reader's Player of the Season for last year has verbally agreed to sign a new contract this week.

Likewise left back Tom Newey is in a similar position to Bolland, and has also been offered a contract extension by the club, but it is yet to sign it.

Meanwhile Town reserves were beaten 2-0 by League One outfit Doncaster Rovers in Monday night's friendly. Despite the defeat new Grimsby manager Graham Rodger was upbeat about the performance. "I think it was exactly what we needed," Rodger told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"We knew that Doncaster would be a decent side and that it would be a hard work-out for us - that proved to be the case. I think they just shaded it, especially in the first-half, but I am a bit disappointed with the goals we conceded.

"The second goal we would have liked to have done a bit more defensively - it was cheap to give away. But Phil Barnes had a good game in goal and when called upon made two or three really good saves.

"We had a few half-chances and we might have nicked a draw, but we came through unscathed injury-wise which is vital at this stage."
