Beat the Bookies: Week 14

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 24/10/2006

LAST week's bets proved unsuccessful, with the Johnstone Paint Trophy failing to throw up too many surprises compared to previous years. However for those who keep betting against Grimsby it was another payday at the weekend, but not surprisingly against Lincoln midweek.

Home > 2006-2007 Season > Beat the Bookies > Week 14

This weekend Town travel to Peterborough and it seems almost impossible to even envisage a Mariners' victory, let alone bet on it! For those reckless enough to back the Mariners to win, bet365.com offer a miserly 3/1. Peterborough in comparison can be backed for 4/5 with bet365.com, which is a reasonable return for your money considering Keith Alexander's sides's elevated league position and Town's miserable form and confidence.

Alexander's old side Lincoln are also going great guns (irritatingly) and face Town's recent opponents Swindon on Saturday. Swindon didn't look as good as their league position suggests, and with Lincoln having won 6 out of 7 of their away games, odds of 12/5 for a City win are well worth considering for your weekend flutter.

Don't forget this weekend sees Lincolnshire's other GTFC, Gainsborough, face their final qualifying game of the FA Cup before the First Round proper. Trinity face ANL Division One outfit Whitley Bay at home in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round match. Whitley Bay are two divisions below their opponents but have a strong FA Cup tradition and have only lost one game all season. Gainsborough in comparison are ensconced in a mid-table berth in the Conference North. The Tyneside club can be backed at 6/1 to win the clash in 90 minutes. The winner will be nestling in the hat along with Grimsby's ball. I can't see John Fenty salivating at the prospect of a short trip to the Northolme on FA Cup First Round day.

For those looking for an upset in the Premiership look no further than Aston Villa to win at Anfield. Villa are available at 11/2 to beat Liverpool, who have had a disappointing start to the season. Villa in contrast are still unbeaten and are more than capable of springing an upset in Merseyside.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Whitley Bay to beat Gainsborough (6/1 with bet365.com).
  • 2. Aston Villa to beat Liverpool (11/2 with bet365.com).

Third best would be Lincoln to win at Swindon but I'm only allowed to bet on two games!
