My Last Season - Macca

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 20/12/2006

Town skipper John McDermott has announced his retirement from football saying this is his last season and says he will definitely hang up his boots at the end of it.

Macca, who has been with Town for 20 years said; "It's no secret that this will be my last season playing. The majority of people know that.

"I have not played the amount of games I would have liked to and it has been really frustrating for me this season.

"Ideally, it would have been good to end my career after the play-off final. For some reason or another, I decided to carry on this year."

"I have enjoyed it and if I was a few years younger I would have carried on - especially now Alan Buckley is back."

"Having said that, I have had these little niggling injuries this year and I have to look to the future really and my well-being."

Players like Macca are a dying breed. Few players stay at a club throughout their careers but Macca has been one of many Grimsby Town players who have stayed with the club for many years.

He will be missed by the fans and he will leave Blundell Park knowing he was always appreciated and supported by the fans and supporters.

All will wish him well in his retirement.
