Don't Write Town Off!

By: Dave Boylen
Date: 18/01/2007

WE have come into a period in the history of Grimsby Town which will probably be the most crucial in the club's history. There are two main issues that have to be confronted in the next two weeks, both of which are very important indeed.

Firstly there is the playing side, which for some reason has been absolutely disastrous recently. We have just suffered a run of five defeats on the trot, which is clearly not very good at all for Town's survival in the Football League.

The other issue is the all important application for the building of the new stadium at the Grimsby Town Hall on Thursday 26th January, which I am hopefully going to. Without going into the boring details once again, the opposition to the stadium are the villagers of Great Coates.

Let's take the football side first. Town's fixtures in the next four games are as follows: Darlington at home, which we need to desperately win, somehow we have got to stop this terrible run of defeats; then on the following Friday there is an away game against Torquay United, who are also struggling at the bottom with Town - this also is a vital match, if we get a point it will be a good result.

Then on Sat 3rd Feb there is an away game against Lincolnshire rivals Boston United. That is a difficult fixture and I know from experience that derby games are never easy. Then the Mariners have a home game against Bristol Rovers. Tough matches indeed.

Alan Buckley I know along with the Chairman John Fenty have been working their socks off to introduce new players to the football club in the January window. My only concern is that the players that do come in will have to be given time to settle and gel together.

In the televised Walsall game it was a better performance than in the home game against Chester. Although we got beat there seemed to be more spirit within the team as a whole. I still have the utmost confidence in manager Alan Buckley. The Mariners need a break, in fact a win, and I don't care how they get it, whether it bounces off the opposition's backside and rolls into the net that will do me, even if it is just a 1-0 home victory, because that is what we need at this present moment in time. A victory will instil confidence in the players which is lacking at the moment.

I always look at the posts on this site with interest, and I have to say some of them disappoint me with the negative attitude that some supporters have. To write Town off to the Conference already, in January, with seventeen games left is not positive. Let's get behind the club and cheer them on, and climb to a respectable position in the table. The club needs everybody to be behind them, not against them. At every home game let's cheer the lads on. Sometimes it's difficult if the quality is not there I agree, and it's frustrating, but in my opinion its negative to boo the lads, and that won't help at all.
