Patto Joins Scunny

MARTIN Paterson has joined Grimsby's rivals Scunthorpe United in a two year deal. Alan Buckley had been hoping that Grimsby would sign the former Stoke striker, but the lure of playing in the Championship proved too great for the 20-year-old.

Paterson's chances of first team football had been limited at Stoke last season and he enjoyed a successful loan spell at Grimsby. But for a administrative error at Blundell Park Paterson's loan would have been extended to the end of the season. However he returned to the Britannia Stadium hoping to break into the first team, without much success.

Realistically Town had little chance of signing Paterson as Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins was one of a number of managers interested in signing Paterson, whose fee is to be set by a tribunal. With the departure of Billy Sharpe to Sheffield United, Paterson will have some act to follow at the Iron.

Alan Buckley is now pursuing other striker targets.
