 Steve Livingstone

Opinions were often divided on 'Livvo'. He always looked like he could score a bagful of goals but never actually did. In my opinion he was a great team player, and he always contributed whether in attack or defence.

He came with a good, but somewhat short, pedigree. Having scored a hattrick for Coventry at a young age he was transferred to Blackburn then Chelsea. Not quite the shiny, bucketful of cash Chelsea we now know and love(?) but, all the same, still with a good reputation.

In all he played for us over 10 seasons with his penultimate season being wrecked by the horrific injury against Derby where he very nearly died on the pitch.

He was always a brave player and the fact that he came back the following season speaks volumes for him as a man. In truth he should probably have retired after the injury as that last season was a struggle, ending in relegation. But was he worse than many others? Probably not. Let's not remember him for that season, during the rest of his time with us all bar one season was played at what is now Championship level. Despite his lack of goals he was no mug and let's not forget the part he played in defence at times during the Wembley seasons.

He deserves a better reputation than he currently seems to have in some quarters, not through sentiment, although few players have come as close as giving his life in a game, but through the fact he was a decent professional who contributed to some of the better times in our history.
