Beat the Bookies: Week 29

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/02/2008

LINCOLN and Barnet failed to win their games at the weekend, but us Mariners can't complain at the results of the last two games, plus the England rugby win and the sorry demise of Chelsea to cheer us up.

One terrific bet if you can bear to place it is the 8/1 on offer from Betfred for Morecambe to win the Johnstone Paint Trophy. Morecambe are certainly not out of the game by any means, and Sammy McIlroy's men definitely have the ability to beat MK Dons if they overcome us. Town's lead is the slenderest of margins and the match is evenly poised. 8/1 says the bookies have all but written Morecambe off because we won the away fixture.

Town surely cannot win again at Morecambe in Saturday's league game if the game were to follow a similar pattern to Tuesday night's game when Lady Luck, the Linesman and Phil Barnes ensured Grimsby kept a clean sheet. But do they bookies know that? Morecambe are 6/5 to win a game they will be desperate to banish the outcome of Tuesday's game in and give their confidence a boost for the second leg. Town at 2/1 are not good value, unless Morecambe have key players missing.

Elsewhere in League Two Rotherham are at home to Accrington Stanley, who have a modest league position, but a terrific away record (as Grimsby can testify sadly). Rotherham with all their off the field problems have only had 1 win in 7 and yet are odds on to win. Stanley can be backed at 4/1. Their recent form is not great but it is surely worth a punt.

Rochdale have lost their last four home games and face a Chesterfield side who have fallen completely out of the promotion places. So neither side are in tip-top form. Chesterfield though won last week and are the class horse in the encounter, with Jack Lester still scoring regularly. 15/8 is surely worthy of consideration for an away win.

One final bet to consider is for Dagenham to make it five wins on the spin at Bradford - who would have predicted their recent run? Certainly not us, who had penciled them in for a bottom two finish long ago. Even their fans seemed resigned to relegation when we went there. Anywhere the Daggers are 13/5 to win at Valley Parade, something they managed to do at Blundell Park to end our long unbeaten run. Can they do it? You never know in the world of League Two.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Morecambe to win the Johnstone Paint Trophy (8/1, Betfred).
  • 2. Accrington Stanley to beat Rotherham (4/1, bet365).
