Is football a business or a sport?

This Could be Our Year!

AFTER a slow start in the transfer market Town have been very vibrant just recently with the signings of Richard Hope (Wrexham) and Matt Heywood,(Brentford), followed by the latest signing of Alan Buckley's who was just the type of player I was hoping he would sign.

Chris Llewellyn from Wrexham is a clever midfield left-sided player aged only 27 with experience with Norwich City and also an ex-Welsh international. The words that the boss said, are I quote: "Chris is my kind of player. He likes to play football and create chances for his team mates".

I myself have been hoping for a long time that when this type of player became available if only Town could sign them. Well there you are they have done it. He is also on a two year contract which again gives stability to the squad. I also know that we are on the edge of signing a striker with a proven goal scoring record who will give additional competition for places to the squad.

The fact that we have almost paid off our tax debt has maybe given the club that little extra to play with in the transfer market. I maintain that there are good players out there to pick up, getting them to come to Grimsby is another subject.

I have to say that I can feel a swing of change in the vision of the Football Club and that this could be the season of achievement. The progress of the new ground, the release of the tax debt, and with the signing of these new players it all points to a strong challenge to get out of this dreadful league.

To my mind you have got to get off to a good start to the season; that is vitally important to everybody at the club. Then you become hard to beat and teams start to give you the respect you deserve. Blundell Park for me used to be a fortress and the Pontoon was the favourite end to play against for the Mariners' players. Lawrie Mac use to say to the opposing managers the Pontoon supporters only have to breathe in and the force of the wind will drag the ball into the net - it might be fictional but even the players believed that one.

I truly believe that this season could be the one for the Mariners and hopefully by the end of the year we will know more about the future of the new ground and also by Xmas we will have a clearer picture of where we are in the promotion stakes, hopefully at the top of the league.
