Grimsby v Chesterfield Preview

GRIMSBY will be endeavouring to show the watching world, and especially their supporters, that last week's mauling at Brentford was a statistical blip rather than a symptom of a deep problem with the squad.

The Opposition

Overview

Chesterfield were one of the pre-season favourites for promotion last season and got off to a good start, regularly finding themselves in the top three. However a poor run in spring saw them fall away from the promotion places, and they finished the season in a disappointing 9th spot. Lee Richardson's (left) side lost their opening game at home to Bury, but since then have won away at Barnet and lie in a mid-table position.

The Team
Chesterfield are once again amongst the pre-season favourites. The Spireites have made a few changes during the summer. However the loss of influential centre back Nicos Kovacs to Lincoln City and midfielder Peter Leven to MK Dons will surely be a blow. Arriving at Saltergate to join a small squad are veteran defenders Kevin Austin and Robert Page alongside ex-Port Vale midfielder Paul Harsley (left).

One to Watch
Jamie Ward. Chesterfield fought off League One side Northampton in the summer who wanted to sign Ward. USA-born Ward normally partners Jack Lester in Chesterfield's side, but can also play as an attacking midfielder. The 24-year-old has had a career interrupted by injuries so far but is still highly rated.

  • Defender Robbie Stockdale (calf) is still ruled out and Richard Hope is also very doubtful. That's likely to mean a start for Ryan Bennett, and possibly Jamie Clarke starting at right back, the position he was originally signed to play in.

  • Danny Boshell (ankle) played in the reserve friendly in midweek and is likely to feature.

  • Top scorer Jack Lester and the Mariners once again fail to cross paths as Lester is injured and will not feature in the game.

    Head to Head

    Town have an excellent record against Chesterfield, especially recently. They did the double over them last season, and have won five out of the last eight games, losing just one.
