Butler Shown The Door

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 15/10/2008

STRIKER Martin Butler has been released from his contract by the Mariners, ending the ongoing issue he had with the 350-mile round trip he chose to undertake from his home to train with the club.

Mariners manager Mike Newell explained to Radio Humberside: "It was a situation I inherited and needed addressing sooner rather than later. Thankfully the chairman and the club have helped make it easy as I wanted to do it straight away".

Butler was finally signed around a year ago after Town had spent months searching for a striker, but failed to have much of an impact as he did not score until Christmas. The 34-year-old appeared to have sorted his problems on the field and with travelling later in the season, and ended up scoring six goals in the second half of the season. looking at times like he had been worth the money.

Once again Butler looked good in the first couple of games this season, but failed to score and his form dipped. The travelling soon became a problem and he has been left out of the side for the last two months.

It does however leave Grimsby without an out an out target man in their permanent squad.

Grim Rob Says: Butler should have been shown the door weeks ago. He has been an unsettling factor around the club at a difficult time. It's pointless keeping somebody on board who does not want to be there. Hopefully the existing strikers will see a big improvement over the coming weeks and Mike Newell will be able to see if he needs anyone new in the New Year.
