Town Reject Bennett Approach

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/05/2009

GRIMSBY have rejected an informal approach from Peterborough for their captain Ryan Bennett. Posh chairman Barry Fry asked the Mariners about the availability of Ryan Bennett after having been told by "several agents" that Grimsby's Player of the Year was available.

Town Chairman John Fenty explained to Mariners Net: "Peterborough made an approach and asked about the boy Bennett. I expressed that Ryan was under contract. Barry made a point of saying that he had several agents, including a PFA representative, suggesting that Ryan was available.

"I reiterated that Ryan had triggered an extension option within his agreement and therefore he is contracted to the club for two years.

"Barry then said, well that's alright John, if that's the situation then so be it"

Fenty then went on to tell Fry that he would not sell Bennett for a million pounds.

Ryan Bennett has had a remarkable season. Last season's Young Player of the Year started the season as a squad player hoping to get a regular place in the first team, and ended up as captain at the age of 18. He was also virtually the only ever-present member of the first team after the first handful of games.

London-born Bennett was originally at Ipswich before being snapped up by the Mariners at the age of 16.

Grim Rob Says: Bennett clearly is a player with a bright future, aged just 19. With less than 100 games under his belt he's still got a lot to learn. However unless someone offers stupid money (i.e. a six figure sum) for him, the Mariners should hang on to the 19-year-old. We almost saw this season what the consequences of relegation would have been and the team urgently needs strengthening so that we are further away from the precipice in the next campaign.
