Bennett To Posh

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/10/2009

THE Fishy has learnt that Ryan Bennett has gone on loan to Peterborough with a view to a permanent move in the January transfer window. Town's captain, who Posh tried to buy in the summer for a figure believed to be substantially over 500K, is to be sold to free up funds.

The central defender was made captain last year by Mike Newell and is the only player to have played in every minute of every game this season. He also won Player of the Year and numerous other awards last season, including the Fishy readers' Player of the Season. London-born Bennett was released by Ipswich as a youth player, but then-Youth Team coach Neil Woods snapped him up and he continued his apprenticeship with Grimsby.

Bennett was coveted by several teams during the summer, and Peterborough put in two bids for the Town captain which were both rejected, although the second would have broken the record for a player from League Two. Town chairman John Fenty at the time quipped he "wouldn't sell Bennett for a million pounds". The transfer was quashed after the 19-year-old signed a four year deal with Grimsby shortly before the season started.

How much of this money will be made available for new players, and how much will pay off former boss Mike Newell is not known. After the poor start to the season it's clear that the side could do with strengthening in other areas, especially midfield. It may be that the club have decided to cash in on their most valuable asset to pay for several new squad members.

Update: The two clubs have agreed terms, and Bennett is considering the move overnight

Update: He's going
