We Are Chavs - Part 2

IF you think The Fishy has some choice language for the Glansford brethren, you should have heard the venom that a few Blades fans had. I heard one insult of "yellow bellies" but the shouts of "F*** off smackheads!" were bemusing to say the least.
It was funny to hear Scunny coming out with what they would do to Blundell Park if they had the arse of a vulture (who needs one you overweight chip chompers?) and how much they hated Codheads. Apart from the "My old man..." chant, how many of our songs refer to them? Exactly. Even in that song, it is more of a space filler. Not one Blades fan passed comment on these chants (they were hard to hear) but I was pretty pleased to hear that we still get under their skin.
The Blades sent in a good low ball from the left after about 10 minutes of funereal silence, or it would have been good if anyone had been near enough to get a touch. However, they were unable to exert any consistent spell of pressure. One good cross was met with a header that went well over the bar and this would set the tone for the game when chances were fashioned. The Blades were to win a good number of corners but the delivery was poor as it was for all set pieces. I would disagree with Kevin Blackwell’s assertion that they had enough chances to win several games as banjoing shots high and wide doesn’t constitute chances in my book.
Lengthy treatment to the Scunny goalkeeper led to four minutes of first half added time. As Matthew went to get a snack as this was being played, the unthinkable happened and Scunny broke quickly down the right (Blackwell has firmly pointed the finger of blame at Nyron Nosworthy) and Martin Hayes was never going to miss as he put the ball past on loan Simonsen in the Blades goal. Simonsen had had an escape earlier when Scunny had broken down the other side of the pitch where he blocked the shot and hadn’t gathered it properly. As with watching Town, I hoped the shock would wake up the home side. Er, no it didn’t.
Half time: Blades 0 Scunts 1
I sarcastically announced that the Blackwell half time talk would shake them up which was met with hoots of derision from the fans around me who thankfully recognised the cynicism. That tells you how popular the manager is. In mitigation, the Blades have been hard hit by injuries but it was till hard to equate the team’s performance with a play off chasing side.
Scunny had a very good chance to go 2 0 up and the Blades goalie did well to block. Another chance saw two break against one only for the Scunt to pass to the only Blade back. An accurate pass would have meant a certain goal. However, as time was beginning to run out, the Blades did fashion some chances and the away keeper did well to tip one over the bar. The Scunny defence didn’t look particularly assured but the home team dithered instead of shooting and when they did shoot, they were woefully off target. Five minutes of additional time saw the Blades get the ball into the opposition penalty area to little effect and they were booed off as they had been at the end of the first half.
Full time Blades 0 Scunts 1
This was worse than losing at Rochdale as I hadn’t expected anything different. I’d never had any animosity towards the away team but I’ve found their intrusion into GTFC based media irritating. They are only 7 points behind the Blades now and need only two more wins for safety, if that. Interesting to hear them (I admit you could hear them now and again when nobody was talking near me) asking Adkins to give them a wave given the vitriol heaped on him by them on Radio Hullberside. They are worse than some of the Grimsby based non match attending callers. Scunt: "Scunny were s***." Hullberside: "Did you go?" Scunt: "Er no, but I heard they were s***" Just like the Johnny-come-lately lot at H*ll who think they are a Premier League club of lengthy pedigree, the Scunts are happy to belittle a manager who has performed wonders for them. I’m glad we don’t have hypocrites at Town. Oops, I’ve just become one.
The Blades are next at home to the Dingles (Barnsley) and regard them much as we do Scunny although Barnsley call Sheffield folk "di- dahs" on behalf of their perceived la-di-dah accent. Not that I would suggest our neighbours are quite as dense...
Roll on Friday when I hope to extinguish the memory of this weekend. We’re off to Brigg v Leek on the way over so hope we can make it a win double for two local teams in black and white stripes.
