Why Sack Woods?

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/11/2010

NEIL WOODS has a point when he claims that Grimsby have been seriously hampered by injuries this season, chiefly to striker Charles Ademeno and goalkeeper Kenny Arthur. Many sides would struggle without two of their key players.

With both players on the verge of returning, and with an extra weekend to rest, Town fans can afford to be hopeful of an improvement in their fortunes in the final month of 2010.

As it is Grimsby has lost just once in eight league games, hardly the calamity that some fans have been claiming, a few even clamouring for Woods to be dismissed as Grimsby manager.

Town's next two fixtures are at Cambridge and Hayes and if they win both of them, the Mariners will be once again on the cusp of the play-offs with over half the season to go.

It's pointless considering getting rid of the manager with so much still to play for this season. Yes the FA Cup exit was disappointing, but it wouldn't have brought much money in, and it could have resulted in injuries and cards for first team players.

We can hardly look back on our last few changes of manager, and say they were successful, with the exception of Russell Slade who did do well. Slade aside, each of them in turn has resulted in Town falling further down the English football ladder. Why risk a further fall, when there is so much to play for this season, and we have key players coming back?

Woods can only really be judged given a whole season in charge, and that's what he should be given. I did not agree with his appointment in the first place, but having made the decision to give him the job we should see it through.
