Eastbourne v Grimsby Preview
By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/01/2011
THE Mariners travel to the South Coast to face a team who haven't won since the 2nd of October or picked up a point since the 13th of November. So 3-2 Eastbourne?
Their History
Borough have had 9 just years under the guise of Eastbourne Borough previously being known as Langney in the hardly well known football hotbed of Sussex. The county only has Brighton as a professional club but Eastbourne’s rise to the Conference back in 2008 maybe the first steps to altering that. The club reached the FA Cup first round for the first time in 2005 and though the club's previous awards have mostly been from local competitions they club are slowly progressing their way through the leagues.
Last Season Was.
A lot tougher than originally thought. The club had survived the previous season (their first in the Conference) well, they found themselves come May 13th and a whopping 17 points clear of relegation. The following year was a different story, the club started fairly well winning games at sporadic but comfortable rates to avoid relegation but come October the club were unable to get a winner in any of their games. An incredible 6 draws out of 7 matches plummeted the Sports down the table with only a win against Welling in the FA Trophy offering light relief. By the end of the January the club had managed just 1 win in the league since September but a late rally saw the club pick up enough points to take their fate to the final day which was set up to be the tightest of finishes. An 84th minute penalty was all that separated Eastbourne from relegation at the end a draw would have seen them doomed to the Conference South.
This Season
It all started so well for The Sports: 2 wins in the opening 3 games, one a huge 5-0 against Hayes, offered so much to the small club even by the time they saddled up to Blundell Park in late October things weren't looking too grim. The club were 15th and in the middle of a run, which saw them make 8 points in 7 League games but soon Eastbourne, were in trouble. 5 successive defeats from November to January saw the club fall through the tight bottom half of the league now in the relegation places the club have yet to recover2 heavy defeats both by 3 goals in the last week haven't done any good either right now Eastbourne are at their lowest ebb.
Key Player: Jamie Taylor
The Crawley-born striker may wish he was at his home town club right now but the 28-year-old is currently top goal scorer and hopefully relishing the challenge he has to face. A series of southern non-league have had Taylor on their books Woking, Aldershot, Grays and Dag &Red have all used the strikers services but non to great affect. This season nonetheless has really seen him come in to his own in a struggling Eastbourne team, 8 goals so far have helped his side to some essential points in the relegation fight they now find themselves in. A real asset to the club right now
Prediction
Eastbourne 0-2 Grimsby
The game really is one Woods and his men should find themselves winners Eastbourne are in dire form and without all 3 points the Woods Out brigade will be out in fine voice.
