TOWN'S final home game of the season ended in defeat to lowly Altrincham to conclude a pitiful campaign in front of their own supporters, with the new managers picking up just 4 points from 6 games at Blundell Park.

The Mariners bossed the majority of the game against a team looking to win to give themselves any chance of avoiding the drop, but were unable to break through a stubborn defence. Then just after half time, the Robins scored a goal on the break through Marc Joseph.

Town made three changes from the side which won at Barrow, with Samuels coming in for Bore at right-back, Hudson replacing Thanoj in midfield and Lee Peacock preferred to Rob Duffy up front. Youth team centre-back Charlie I'Anson retained his place after two clean sheets, maximum points and one goal in his two games so far.

Altrincham almost scored within a few seconds. Reeves was played through, but was only denied by a last gasp challenge by Bradley Wood. Arthur then made a good save to deny a long range Joseph shot, and although the visitors "scored" from the rebound, it was disallowed for offside.

Town had the bulk of the first half possession and went close on a number of occasions but Altrincham should have scored on 32 minutes when Johnson ballooned the ball over the bar from close range in front of an open goal.

The visitors took the lead from a second half corner, when the unmarked Joseph heading the ball in at the far post.

Grimsby dominated the remainder of the game but were unable to carve out a decent opening.

The season ends on Saturday when Town play play-off favourites Wimbledon away.
