Third Game Syndrome Strikes Again

GRIMSBY once again failed to record three consecutive wins. something they have not managed for nearly four years. The Mariners have several times won two games on the bounce in the intervening time, but have always fallen at the third hurdle.

During the Conference years Town have spluttered and started at best. There has never been a spell where they have really looked like putting together the sort of run together that would lift them into a play-off spot. Before the match at Stockport, hopes were high that this might be the day after two wins and two clean sheets in the previous two games.

However against County Town never looked like overcoming their unfortunate Third Game Syndrome. The home side scored the only goal of a low-key first half, and went further ahead in the second when a Elliot header doubled County's lead. Town strikers had a few chances but, as for most of this season, they failed to put them away.

Town as expected made no changes for the game after having pulled themselves away from the bottom of the table with two wins against Forest Green and Hayes.

Duffy had what proved to be Town's best chance of the game early on after a good run by Coulson, but the 'keeper got his hand to the Town striker's shot.

After a lacklustre first 22 minutes the home side took the lead. Green slipped as a cross went into the box and it allowed McConville the time and the space to drill the ball through a crowded box.

Town's remaining efforts of the first half were restricted to long range shots.

Early in the second half two Town defenders collided allowing German to run to the goal line. He slotted the ball past McKeown from a very narrow angle but it ran along the goal line and went wide.

On 60 Stockport doubled the lead when a cross from the right hand side was met by the head of Elliot, giving McKeown no chance.

Grimsby brought on their subs by never really looked like pulling one goal back never mind two.

In the end there was not much between the sides but Town did not generate enough clear chances to really expect to get much from the game.
