Battle Resumes After 85 Years

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/10/2011

GRIMSBY face minnows Ashington in the FA Cup this weekend, hoping that the North Easterners will not be the latest lower league side to which the Mariners succumb in cup competitions.

The Mariners have a poor record against supposedly inferior sides, although on this occasion the gulf between the two teams is probably larger than any of their defeats in modern times to sides in leagues beneath them. Ashington are four levels below Town in the non-league pyramid - the equivalent to Grimsby playing a side in the Premier League.

Town have signed Hull City defender Conor Townsend on a month's loan. The left back has been allowed by City to take part in tomorrow's game. Townsend (18) has never played for the Tigers before. Town have been relatively light in the left back area due to Jamie Green's continual injury situation.

The part timers have no known injury problems. They have already knocked out Vauxhall and Guiseley in the FA Cup, although they are mid-table in their Northern League Division One.

Ashington were a Football League side between 1921 and 1929 and have played Town before on 10 occasions. They both have won five and there has never been a draw (Town have beaten them 6-1, 7-4 and 4-0). So after 85 years the battle can resume to see who can claim overall honours.
