GRIMSBY secured a comfortable victory in the FA Trophy on Saturday, romping home to the first win over Darlington at Blundell Park since the 1980's. Coulson (two) and Elding scored Town's goals in a 3-0 victory, extending the Mariners' unbeaten run to 10 games.
The FA Trophy is a very low priority in many supporters' eyes but Town played a strong team in their opening game, and will be relieved to have finally broken the spell Darlo appear to have cast over Blundell Park for over 20 years.
Coulson scored midway through the first half, before Anthony Elding put Town 2-0 up just before the break. Just after half time the Mariners all but ensured their victory when Coulson added a second.
Darlo had few chances throughout the game, meaning Town picked up another clean sheet, their fourth in a row, and sixth of the unbeaten run
"This is a call for action - get behind the football club and come and enjoy what is happening."
Town could still benefit from an extended FA Cup run (entailing beating Salisbury and Sheffield United for a chance of a more substantial sum), or the sale of Ryan Bennett from Peterborough to a big Premier League side (Grimsby would pocket 20% of the proceeds). However pending these one-off payments there appears to be little option but to make large cuts somewhere in the club's budget if Town are to get closer to being solvent.
Fenty continues to refuse to become Chairman again without the majority holding he sees as necessary for the post:
Fenty explained: "I am not prepared, as it stands, to fund the magnitude of the financial gap on my own given that in 21 days an EGM could be called, and there is two key blocks of shares outside the boardroom, and they could see me removed just like that.
