The Joy of Six

GRIMSBY Town made light of Bath City's record as their "bogey" side, cantering past the bottom side with some ease, and eventually running out 6-0 winners. Liam Hearn added to his growing transfer value with a stunning fourth hat trick of the season.

The goal glut means Town are now the top scoring side in Britain at their home ground. The Mariners have netted an incredible 41 goals in 15 league games this season at their own stadium - yet still managed to lose 4 games! In cup games Grimsby have also scored 15 goals in 6 matches in Cleethorpes. Someone who has been to every game at Blundell Park this season will have seen 79 goals already scored by both sides!

The only downside of the game was Town manager Rob Scott was dismissed for arguing with the match officials when the score was 3-0.

The managers decided to bring back Craig Disley and Ian Miller into the side after they both missed the Hornchurch game. Other than that there was no changes from the team which won the previous game 4-0.

Bath started well and for the first 15 minutes caused Town some problems. Town were soon able to settle into their stride though when they scored from their first meaningful attack. Gary Silk crossed the ball from the right to the far post, where it was knocked back to Hearn in the centre of goal who poked it in like the ace marksman he is.

With neither side really able to get a hold of the game, the rest of the half was a fairly scrappy affair but Town were handed a gift when from a Coulson free kick Bath defender Gallinagh prodded the ball into his own net with no Town player particularly close to him.

Bath were in generous mood after the break as well. A terrible back pass by a Bath defender presented the ball to Hearn in the six yard box. Town's top scorer dinked the ball round the 'keeper and made City pay for their mistake.

The pick of the goals was Town's fourth and Hearn's hat trick. Coulson was once again the provider when he unleashed a long ball upfield. Hearn chased it, chested the ball once and then lobbed it exquisitely over the 'keeper.

With the match well won Town even managed to add a couple of goals from their substitutes. Townsend picked out ex-Kettering striker Hughes-Mason to prod it in from close range, before Anthony Church hammered in a terrific finish from the edge of the area.

Town's strength in depth in the squad is there for all to see in the recent games where players have been rested or suspended and others come in and looked just as capable. With a fully fit side to pick from Town finally seem to be starting to live up to the potential of their wage bill. An unlikely late charge for the play-offs is looking more feasible after every win, but six points in the next two matches against Barrow and Telford looks essential if that is to be the case. Town have already beaten their next opponents Barrow 5-2 this season (one of three games to end in that scoreline), but following those two matches Grimsby have to play top sides York and Southport, where their new found form will be well tested.
