The Fall From Plaice - Part 7

By: Gainsbro Mariner
Date: 16/01/2013 (Last updated: 20/01/2013)

JAMMAL Shahin was snubbed a professional contract in 2007 after winning the Midlands Youth Cup with the youth team a year earlier. After being released he joined Armthorpe Welfare only then to be re-signed by Mike Newell after being recommended to Newell by his former youth team boss Neil Woods.

Shahin briefly became a first team regular, and many will remember him putting in a shift despite losing 3-1 to Leeds United at Elland Road in the Johnstone Paint Trophy. He was quick, slippery but somewhat a little bit lightweight. He was released in 2010 for a second time and dropped down to join Selby Town. Since then he has appeared for Cleethorpes Town, Spalding United and now plays for Brigg Town.

It's safe to say we saw the good and the bad of the former Arsenal, Bolton and Birmingham striker. His first spell was some what fruitful despite relegation being the outcome, where has his second spell fetched 2 league goals in 2 seasons. Rankin's Grimsby departure was inevitable in the end when Alan Buckley farmed him out on loan to Macclesfield Town and then released him. In 2008 he joined Conference side Stevenage and later moved on to Crawley Town once released.

In the summer of 2009 he signed with Forest Green Rovers where he remained for a season before signing with lowly semi pro's Ashford Town Middlesex who were managed by former Mariner Jamie Lawrence. In 2011 after Lawrence's departure Rankin joined Hendon which is where he remains now at the age of 34.
