Town Avoid Humiliating Defeat

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/08/2013

GRIMSBY got off to another poor start to the season, following the long standing tradition. Only a late Ross Hannah penalty saved Grimsby from a humiliating defeat to a makeshift Aldershot side which had only been put together in the days running up to the game.

The Mariners looked like the team that had been assembled at the last minute and Town's only shot on target during the entire game was the 81st min penalty. Grimsby's new-look 4-3-3 formation failed to produce the chances the managers had hoped for, and it was only during the re-introduction of 4-4-2 in the closing stages that Grimsby managed to rescue a point.

Elsewhere in the division favourites Forest Green thumped Hyde 8-0 to put down a statement of their own intent. Many peoples' dark horses Cambridge thrashed newcomers Halifax 5-1 in today's match. However Luton manager John Still saw his side well beaten at Southport, who dominated the game despite winning just 1-0, and the Hatters also had a player sent off.

Kidderminster got off to a winning start, in stark contrast to last season where they lost their first six games, and Wrexham overcame newcomers Welling 2-1 at the Racecourse.
