Town Lose Derby

GRIMSBY lost a see-saw derby against Lincoln 3-2 after twice equalising, but they eventually succumbed to a late goal which put the Imps ahead for the third time in the game. Earlier Town had gifted Lincoln two penalties, the first of which Lincoln missed when Tomlinson struck the post.

The equalisers looked to have earned Town a point but, after dominating the second half, a late sucker punch left the away contingent in the unfamiliar position of leaving Sincil Bank with nothing to show for their day out.

Paul Hurst made two changes from the win against Welling. Striker Lenell John-Lewis was preferred to combat Lincoln's physical approach and Craig Disley replaced Paddy McLaughlin in midfield.

Lincoln drew first blood when dangerman Ben Tomlinson whipped in a perfect cross for Burrow to get in front of Toto Nsiala and glance a header past McKeown from close range

The match is normally played at Christmas time, and Town gave Lincoln an early gift when Nsiala pushed over Tomlinson. The winger stepped up and hit the post to give Town a lifeline of getting something from the game.

Lincoln dominated and could have gone further ahead but were unlucky to hit the underside of the bar. Against the run of play Disley equalised just before half time when a Brown free kick was cleared to him at the edge of the box and he picked his spot to level the game.

Town presented Lincoln with another gift early in the second half when Bignot pulled back the ubiquitous Tomlinson, and this time Newton took the spot kick and made no mistake from 12 yards.

But the lead last but two minutes when John-Lewis created a chance for Pittman who curled it over the 'keeper to silence the home crowd once again.

Town had chances to put the game to bed, John-Lewis missing the target on a one-on-one with the 'keeper being the most notable. But it was Lincoln who had the last laugh with a late corner. Poor defending left the unmarked Bencherif on the far post for a tap-in.

Grimsby will be disappointed with the gimmes they gifted Lincoln but the Mariners missed the chances that fell to them in the second half and it wasn't Town's day this year.
