Mackreth: Winner |
Town Win in Rare Macc Attack

GRIMSBY inflicted Macclesfield's first home defeat of the season on them, thanks to an early goal from former Macc winger Jack Mackreth. Mackreth scored in Town's first attack and it proved enough to see Town through to the final whistle.
It was Grimsby's fourth consecutive away win on Boxing Day, coming on the back of three victorious years at Sincil Bank.
Paul Hurst made just one change, with Aswad Thomas coming in for Carl Magnay, who was ill, at left back.
Town went 1-0 up in the 3rd minute in their first foray up that end of the pitch. John-Lewis played in Arnold whose shot was saved, and Mackreth reacted quickest to slot in the rebound against his former club.
Macclesfield had most of the possession both before and after the goal, and McKeown had to make a fine save to deny a long-range shot from Moke.
Toto Nsiala received his tenth booking of the season just before half time, although the decision looked hard on the defender, which means that the full back will be missing for the Lincoln game and the second match with Macclesfield which follows it.
For the remainder of the match Macclesfield had most of the possession but were unable to break down Town's stubborn defence and McKeown had a quiet day between the sticks with barely a shot to save. With about 20 minutes to go, Hurst replaced Pittman with Clay, and Grimsby switched to 4-5-1, in effect trying to defend what they had.
In fact the closest to a second goal came when Mackreth almost got on the end of a John-Lewis cross.
It wasn't a classic game but none of the 700 Town fans present cared, because the valuable three points consolidates Town's position in the top 4 and the Mariners have to be second favourites now to take the crown, which at the moment is Barnet's to lose. Grimsby still have to play Barnet twice of course.
