Town Keep Title Hopes Alive

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/04/2015

GRIMSBY kept their title hope alive with a win at Alfreton on Easter Monday that kept them within three points of the summit of non-league football. Earlier in the day Barnet beat Dartford and Bristol Rovers also picked up three points.

2500 Town fans cheered on the team to another victory with Josh Gowling and Lenell John-Lewis both scoring in the second half.

Paul Hurst made several changes with Parslow, Gowling, Pittman and Clay all coming in for Town.

Town had the best early chances but Alfreton's Hawley had two chances to score for the home side but misheaded and then mishit the pair of them.

Towards the end of the first half John-Lewis missed Grimsby's best chance.

The first half ended 0-0 with Town the better side but Grimsby missed the few chances that came their way.

Town finally took the lead midway through the second half. Josh Gowling was the unlikely hero as the ball flicked off him from Mackreth's shot into the net.

Town should have made it two when Mackreth and John-Lewis combined but the former hit the post.

Alfreton appeared to have scored but the linesmen adjudged it not to have crossed the line, but then John-Lewis headed Town two goals in front from Clay's cross with three minutes to go to seal the points.

With three games to go Town need to rely on both of their opponents dropping points. Each side has two games left at home and one away. As Barnet have a much better goal difference than Grimsby then the Bees probably need to win two of their games to finish ahead of Town.
