GRIMSBY face big spenders Forest Green Rovers at Wembley tomorrow in a winner-takes-all match with the prize being the dream of every non-league supporter: a place in the Football League. Town once took that place for granted but they lost in six years ago and this is their best chance yet of getting it back.
Last year Town reached the same stage and lost to Bristol Rovers, who were favourites to make the jump back to the Football League. This time the bookies make the Mariners favourites to win the game, but it won't be easy against an experienced side packed with players who have played at a higher level.
Town have doubts over winger Andy Monkhouse (knee) and full back Evan Horwood (knock). Monkhouse dropped out of the second game with Braintree and this game may have come too early for the veteran. Paul Hurst started with three up front against Braintree and ended the match with two wingers. That eventually broke down the stubborn Essex side, but Forest Green are a different proposition and Hurst will doubtless pick a side which he feels will exploit their weaknesses. Winger Marcus Marshall proved the unlikely key to breaking down Braintree but after three months out it would be a surprise if Marshall began the game.
Whatever happens it will be more like a home game for the Mariners, whose supporters will hugely outnumber Forest Green's. Let's hope the superiority in the stands is relected on the pitch.
