Town Lose It in Colchester

GRIMSBY lost their second away game on the London fringes within a week. A very poor defensive display in the first half saw the Mariners struggle to contain the home side, who raced into a 3-0 lead. However, Town recovered from a 3-0 half time deficit but ended up losing 3-2 at Colchester.

Ashley Chambers and Omar Bogle replaced Sean McAllister and Scott Vernon respectively. Town almost scored in the opening minute in a passage of play that belied what was to come in the remainder of the first half. The Mariners won the first corner of the game and a near post flick by Berrett went into the side netting.

After that Town's defence were all at sea. A free kick resulted in a shot which hit the top of the bar and a panicky clearance eventually ensued. Colchester took a deserved lead when the defence failed to clear a ball in the book and Dickenson hooked it in from the edge of the box.

The defence was asleep again soon afterwards but were let off when the ball hit the post. Town briefly threatened with a good move but it ended with a tame shot by Andrew for an easy save.

The score was soon 2-0 after the defence failed to muster any challenge to Guthrie who drilled it in, and Dickenson soon rang rings around Town's static rearguard to add the third.

Disley came on for Boyce after the break, and the Town skipper rose to power in a header and give Grimsby a lifeline. Town should have had a penalty with the score 3-1 when Bogle was pushed into the net from a position he would have scored from.

Jackson had another couple of chances which Town needed to take, but the on-loan striker couldn't get the ball past Walker on a one-on-one, and the keeper saved with his feet. Jackson then volleyed wide from a good position.

Town salvaged a consolation from Bogle in injury time to salvage some creditability, but in truth the game was lost in the first half. Colchester were the best of the three teams that Grimsby have played so far, and on this showing Town were some way off what it takes to challenge at the right end of the table.
