Town Triumph at Port Vale

GRIMSBY came from behind to record a rare away win at struggling Port Vale. Tom Pope had given Vale a first half lead but Town turned it around after the break with goals from Sam Jones and a winner from Bairiki Dembele, his first goal for the club.

Russell Slade made just one change, bringing in striker Scott Vernon in place of Jamille Matt.

Vale were the better team in the first half and Whitfield should have done better when the ball fell to him in the box but his shot went wide. Town's only effort in the first half hour was a long range shot from Dembele, which the keeper easily collected.

Port Vale took the lead when a deep cross from the left hand side was knocked back down to Pope, who drilled home from close range.

Town levelled soon after the break when Jones flicked a corner on the near post high into the net. Grimsby continued to be the better wide and Vernon should have done better with a good Dixon cross, and then the Vale 'keeper denied Dembele.

But it was to be the diminutive winger's day in a stunning goal. Summerfield delivered a stunning pass which split the defence and Dembele literally walked the ball into the net in front of the ecstatic Town fans.

Town held on to survive some late pressure and pick up three much needed points. With the bottom three adrift the Mariners are definitely looking upwards rather than downwards, although
