TOWN came back down to earth following their two draws with Lincoln and MK Dons. The Mariners were well beaten at Newport, although they only lost by a solitary goal. Striker Wes Thomas was also harshly sent off in the dying stages, a decision which the club will appeal.

Michael Jolley made just one change, with Luke Hendrie replacing the suspended Paul Dixon in defence.

Newport had the better of the first half and Amond was denied in an early chance thanks to a challenge from Alex Whitmore.

Newport went close with one Dolan free kick, but they went ahead from a set piece when Dolan curled one past McKeown.

Mitch Rose replaced Clifton at half time as Michael Jolley tried to beef up the midfield. Hessenthaler came closest to carving an opening for Town but his cross was blocked before the game was effectively ended when Thomas was sent off for a high challenge.

Grimsby have played 3 of the top 7 sides and their next opponents, Yeovil, also have started strongly at currently lie seventh.
