All Change at Crewe

GRIMSBY'S fine run ended at Crewe with a 2-0 reverse at Gresty Road which also saw the Mariners end their run of clean sheets in the league. The Mariners never came close to scoring, and it was Crewe who eventually broke the deadlock with two second-half goals.

Michael Jolley kept the same side for the fifth game running, unsurprisingly as the team had brought him ten points from the last four games and lifted Town away from the bottom two.

Neither side really tested the 'keeper in the first half, with both shot stoppers making saves you'd expect them to make. McKeown made a save with his feet to deny Miller, and Hooper had two shots which both lacked the power to trouble Garratt in Crewe's goal.

Wes Thomas had Town's best chance shortly before halftime when he turned a defender to go through on goal, but Garratt did well to save Thomas's effort.

Both keepers were in action early in the second half. McKeown saved Ainley’s effort at one end before Town went down the other end and Garratt clawed away a good effort by Charles Vernam.

Crewe finally broke the deadlock with a Bowery run was picked out which split Town's defence and he shot under McKeown to give Crewe the lead.

Crewe made sure of their win with a second goal within 10 minutes after Miller headed in a cross to double the lead.

Town had the chances in the first half but suffered from the usual problem of goal-shy strikers. They have been relying on not conceding for most of their recent points, with goals few and far between. That wasn't going to last forever, though, and the match reiterated again the need for a goalscorer.

Michael Jolley now has to decide whether to persevere with the 11 players who had done so well, or use the opportunity to make chances that might have been at the back of his mind to try.
