GRIMSBY continued their winless streak with another home defeat, this time to lowly Macclesfield. The Mariners have responded to Michael Jolley's Manager of the Month award for December by losing all three games in January to date.
Although the other two defeats were against supposedly better sides this was a game Town had been expected to win.
Town were once again forced to change their defence due to injuries and suspensions and Swede Sebastian Ring made his Town debut at left back alongside Akin Famewo who also returned to the back four. The other Swede, Ludvig Ohman, was named on the bench. Ben Pringle and Charles Vernam also returned to the side after being overlooked at Palace.
Influential midfielder Harry Clifton has to leave the pitch through injury midway through the first half and his absence unsettled Town. Macclesfield soon took the lead when a Miles Welch-Hayes free-kick went under the home wall and Marsh only had to make contact from close range to divert the ball in the net.
Town shot themselves in the foot Mitch Rose, who had replaced Clifton in midfield, was dispossessed on the edge of the area by Wilson who made no mistake to slot the ball past McKeown.
Town had a mountain to climb and Macclesfield were able to soak up the pressure with Town not looking capable of scoring.
Ring and Thomas missed Grimsby's best chances in the second half, but Macclesfield looked the more dangerous and Marsh went close to extending their lead.
Town next face Lincoln, flying high at the top of League Two, in the Lincolnshire derby next week.
