Five Star Town

GRIMSBY Town romped home 5-2 winners in an entertaining 5-2 Bank Holiday weekend clash with Port Vale. The Mariners initially fell behind to a Whitehouse own goal, before going 3-1 up. Vale pegged a goal back to make it 3-2 before two late goals sealed the three points for the Mariners.

Five different players scored for Grimsby who are now the division's top scorers and sit in 7th place in the (admittedly early) league table. The Mariners have only lost one of the six games this season and have also reached Round 2 of the EFL Cup for the first time since returning to the Football League. All in all, it is a promising start to the campaign for Michael Jolley's side.

Jordan Cook came into midfield to replace Sebastian Ring in the game's only change, and Elliott Hewitt and Luke Hendrie played in the two full-back berths.

After a fairly quiet start Vale took the lead when a free-kick was played into the box to Worrall and Whitehouse accidentally bundled the ball over the line.

Grimsby soon levelled the game though when a clever free-kick by Cook avoided the wall and gave the 'keeper no chance.

The Mariners got another blow when Harry Davis was forced off with a shoulder injury just before half time, not the first time this season that Grimsby have been forced to an early defensive change. He was replaced by Mattie Pollock.

Town started the second half with a bang and Ogbu and Cook both went close before the former put Town in front for the first time with his first goal for the Mariners. A ball was headed down the onrushing striker who blasted it past the keeper to make the score 2-1 and celebrated with an acrobatic flip in front of the Pontoon.

Hanson then played Green through with a clever flicked header and he raced through and calmly slotted it past Scott Brown to give Grimsby a two-goal cushion.

Vale were not to be undone though and Nathan Smith silenced the home celebrations temporarily with a scuffed shot to make the score 3-2 and unnerve the crowd.

With 10 minutes new signing Luke Waterfall, though, headed in a fourth give Town daylight and Hanson put the game beyond doubt after a great bit of play by Wright who crossed the ball for Town's No 9 to make no mistake in front of goal.

It was an emphatic win and Town took most of their chances with most of the squad either scoring or assisting in the goals.
