Official Kick in the Teeth

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/09/2019

GRIMSBY succumbed to their third league defeat of the campaign when they lost 1-0 at Salford. Town conceded a poor free-kick which looked like a goalkeeping mistake and then appeared to have equalised through a Jordan Cook free-kick but it was disallowed apparently by the 4th official who has seen an infringement.

Jordan Cook and Matt Green came in for Elliott Hewitt and Max Wright otherwise the side was unchanged from the one that drew at Oldham.

Neither side threatened the goal and Salford took an undeserved lead when a Shelton free-kick went through the wall and beat McKeown in the centre of the goal.

After the break, Jordan Cook appeared to have scored with a direct strike from a free-kick and the players were heading back to the centre circle to restart. However, the referee and the fourth official exchanged words and a free-kick was awarded against Town.

Town then dominated possession but didn't really threaten until the last ten minutes when Waterfall and Hanson both went very close to scoring a deserved equaliser.

It was rough justice for Town. Three days after securing an undeserved point at Oldham, they deserved at least a point at Salford.
