Grimsby Win Away!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/02/2022

A DRAMATIC late winner ensured that Grimsby secured their first away league win since the start of October although they had to come from behind, and also missed a penalty. Backed by a big away contingent, the Mariners secured the points with a late free-kick and another Luke Waterfall set-piece goal.

The Mariners started with the same side that beat Wealdstone last week. Notts County started the stronger though and Roberts was allowed to make a run into the Town box where he fired a shot past Crocombe to give the hosts the lead.

Grimsby were yet to really mount a challenge but they were handed a gift with a penalty after McAtee was brought down. Jaros though made a good save to deny Ryan Taylor and the home side were still 1-0 up.

Town didn't rue their miss though as they soon started to dominate the game with dangerman McAtee creating chances for Taylor and Clifton as well as having a shot og his own blocked. Mcatee then set up Clifton who was unlucky to strike the post.

Grimsby ended the first half strongly, so it was a surprise when Fox replaced Coke at the start of the second half.

Town though continued to dominate and Sousa had a shot blocked, and McAtee hit the rebound wide. Fox was then forced off injured, meaning the substitute was substituted, by Wright.

Grimsby finally got the equaliser they desperately deserved. McAtee was against the provider when his cross was palmed down by the keeper and Ryan Taylor was quickest to react and make up for his penalty miss.

Notts then had a spell where they were on top for a bit, but Grimsby had the last laugh when Abrahams, who had just replaced McAtee was brought down in what should arguably have been a sending off but was deemed only yellow. Amos's free kick was headed on by Waterfall and bundled over the line by Efete to jubilant scenes from 2,500 Grimsby supporters.

There was still 5 minutes of injury time to negotiate, but Town survived to claim a richly deserved three points and secure their first back to back wins since the first few weeks of the season.

Grimsby face King's Lynn at Blundell Park Tuesday hoping to make it three wins in succession.
