The Day the Rains Came

IT had rained. It was raining. It continued to rain. Allotment holders rejoiced. Blundell Park was sodden. Town’s team for the visit of Carlisle was: Crocombe - Efete, Waterfall, Smith, Amos - Kiernan, Holohan, Green, Morris, Glennon - Taylor. The water fell. The game kicked off.

Town played enterprisingly as far as was possible in these conditions. Glennon did good work on the left, attacking and crossing. It was harder on the right where the ball stuck, water flew up and passes fell short in front of the Findus stand. Kiernan had two chances, first with a shot which went over the bar and into the Osmond stand, and then with a free header which Carlisle’s keeper Holy gathered low. Carlisle countered. A shot deflected off Smith for a corner. The teams struggled as conditions got worse. The referee stopped the game after 20 minutes to allow the ground staff to sweep away the water. But it was like turning back the tide. The game continued after a 6-minute stoppage. It continued to rain. Efete made a pass. It stopped after a foot. Glennon and the Carlisle right back went in for the ball. Both disappeared under the water, aquaplaning towards the corner of the Main and Osmond stands. It was impossible. The referee abandoned the game. We all have to do it again. It’s a 200-mile trip back to Carlisle for many of their body of supporters here tonight. You have to feel sorry for them.

Even in these conditions, Town played with confidence, and the line-up looked strong. Otherwise, there are no conclusions that can be drawn. Town lie in 17th place with the proverbial game in hand. It was the rain that won the day.
