Brighton Match on Sunday Afternoon

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/03/2023

GRIMSBY will travel to Brighton for their FA Cup Quarter Final on Sunday 19th March (14:15), the first time they have reached the last 8 since 1939. The match will be shown live on BBC1, another possible first in an exceptional 12 months for the Mariners and their supporters.

Grimsby have been given 4600 tickets, which are likely to be snapped up relatively quickly, and it seems certain that the entire allocation will be sold, mainly to season ticket holders and other regular supporters who get the first chance to buy tickets. The Quarters kick off with Man City v Burnley on Saturday evening, before Grimsby's Sunday game sandwiched between Sheff Utd v Blackburn and Man Utd v Fulham in a terrestrial TV triple bill.

Town have kept a relatively low profile until now, with even their promotion exploits last year not receiving national attention. Their first four Cup victories over Plymouth, Cambridge, Burton and Luton (after a replay) were overshadowed by other teams, but now Grimsby stand alone with the other 7 teams being from the top two divisions. The win over Southampton has ramped up the media interest, however, prompting BBC to select it as their Sunday game.

Should Town get through to the semis it would equal their two achievements of the 1930s when the pre-war Mariners team was amongst the nation's top clubs. Town, founded in 1878, got relegated shortly after sport restarted upon the conclusion of the global conflict. The Mariners have bounced around the leagues since the 1940s but have never come close to regaining their top-flight status, or reaching the business end of the national cups, until now.
