Hurst opts for Continuity

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/05/2023

PAUL Hurst's retained list has largely resulted in the least-used players leaving the club, and much of Town's squad next season will be drawn from this year's.

The players released are: Ollie Battersby, Bryn Morris, Ryan Taylor, Josh Emmanuel, Owen Gallacher, Jaz Goundry, Jordan Cropper and Sean Scannell.

The loan players will also be returning to their clubs. They are: George Lloyd, John McAtee, Mikey O’Neill, Tom Dickson-Peters and Andy Smith.

'Keeper Max Crocombe has been offered terms to continue at Blundell Park, and Shaun Pearson is retiring and will join the coaching staff but as it is Town have a nucleus of 14 players under contract.

One of the advantages of keeping a manager for several seasons is to build a team slowly rather than the large-scale changes that tend to come from changing course.

The immediate priority is to retain Max Crocombe but otherwise, Paul Hurst's mission is to replace the players who have left with as good or better ones, especially Taylor, McAtee, Emmanuel and Morris who played regularly. The Mariners need another 15-20 points to be competitive next season, and it arguably looks like a stronger division than the 2023-24 season's, so this summer's business is as important as ever, even though Grimsby have had to sign more players some years than they will this one.
