All Square at Tranmere

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/10/2023

GRIMSBY had to settle for another point on the road at Tranmere. The Mariners fell behind to an early goal but goals from Rose and Pyke gave Town a halftime lead. However, a bullet header from Connor restored parity in the second half.

The game ebbed and flowed and there were spells when Grimsby were on top, at other times Tranmere dominated. Each side's tactical changes were countered by the other, resulting in shift changes in the ascendancy.

Donovan Wilson started for the first time after his two sub goals. Harry Clifton also came back into the side. Khan and Holohan dropped to the bench, so Grimsby started with two up front with Wilson partnering Rose.

Town started well without creating much and the first incident of note came when Wilson and keeper McGee had a collision, with Wilson coming off worse although McGee won the ball so there was no foul committed.

Shortly afterwards Tranmere took the lead when Saunders chipped the ball to pick out Morris's run, who finished well, but questions will be asked about the big defensive gap he ran into.

Tranmere were not celebrating for long. Eisa picked out Wilson outside the box, whose strike bounced off a defender to Rose on the right of goal who scored from a narrow angle. There was an element of a fortune but it was a good finish. Wilson went off shortly afterwards for Pyke.

Just before the break, Grimsby were in front. Mullarkey crossed from the right and Rose laid the ball off to Pyke who finished well.

After the break Town almost went 3-1 up when Clifton crossed to Pkye whose point-blank header was brilliantly saved by McGee from close range.

On the hour mark Tranmere equalised, with a powerful header from a cross from the left-hand side. Tranmere were on top at this stage but a double sub of Khan and Holohan for Rose and Conteh swung the pendulum in Town's favour.

Another positive substitution by Hurst saw Gnahoua replace Eisa just before the 90-minute mark. Grimsby came close on several occasions, but the season's first away win still eludes them.

Next weekend sees Town take on Accrington at Blundell Park.
