Who will win League 2?

Hyde Strikes Again

TOWN'S Jekyll and Hyde season continued with Mr Hyde's appearance at home to Walsall. The Mariners have won 6 and lost 6 of their opening 12 games, and are yet to draw. The season has, in the main, been a mixture of good wins and bad defeats. This was the latter.

Harvey Rodgers came in for Doug Tharme in defence, which was the only change from the side that won at Salford last weekend. Wall

The Mariners dominated the first half but produced little "end product" for all their possession. Town's best chances resulted in saves from efforts by Rose and Barrington. Walsall grew stronger as the first half progressed, and Lowe had a goal disallowed near the end.

Grimsby head at Hume shot straight at the keep just after the break, but after a strong opening, Walsall began to dominate the second period. Former Mariner Jamille Matt scored Walsall's first goal from a Barrett cross and it was soon two thanks to a superb volley by Jellis which will be a contender for goal of the month. Poor defending from a corner made it three and the match was over.

Town grabbed a consolation when Wilson dispossessed the Walsall keeper and walked the ball into the net. But Walsall restored their three-goal cushion in injury time when Johnson scored at close range from a cross.

It was a disappointing performance. Grimsby looked error-prone and had lots of possession but created very little. This allows the opposition to bide their time and wait for the mistakes. Fortunately, the league table still looks healthy, but with two tough games coming up (Tranmere away and MK Dons at home) before the FA Cup break, then Town need to keep their points total ticking over to maintain a healthy spot in the table.
